The book UP IN THE AIR written 2001 by Walter Krin is very boring and monotone. The movie was a little better but only because George Cooney played lead. There are many differences in the movie version due to events that occurred 2001-2009. The character Asif Ryan’s Brother in law from Pakistan was omitted in the movie due to social outlook on the Arab Nations. Ryan’s relationship with his family especially, Julie showed more of a loving bond in the book than in the movie. The relationship with Alex took on more value in the movie than in the book.

The attack on the United States on September 11th 2001 at the twin towers in New York really woke the Americans and caused many to re-think life. Family, community and church resurfaced as priority in our lives.

In the book, written before the 911event Ryan has a brother in law, Asif from Pakistan. (Krin Pg 142). http://www.civilrights.org/hatecrimes/united-states/050-arab-hate-crimes.html

Asif is omitted altogether in the movie due to negative social view of the Arab Americans and the controversies it would make. In an article featured in a civil rights web site in 2008 it is suggested that “After a post-9/11 spike, hate crimes and discrimination against Arab Americans have been steadily decreasing, but the number of violent crimes against Arab Americans remains higher than before 9/11, according to a new report by the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC) released on December 4.” (Tanenbaum)

Ryan goes to find his sister Julie when she runs away. He spends time with her after finding her. He is more generous buying her a plane ticket and allowing her to travel with him. He is not worried about his future; in fact his main concern is the book he is writing. He is also spending a good amount of time pursuing the publisher for an answer. He is not worried about money because the market crash hasn’t happened yet so he can afford to be generous.

“The United States economy experienced a crisis in 2008 led by a derivatives market and    subprime mortgage crisis, and a declining dollar value.[41] On December 1, 2008, the NBER declared that the United States entered a recession in December 2007, citing employment and production figures as well as the third quarter decline in GDP.[42] The recession did, however, lead to a reduction in record trade deficits, which fell from $840 billion annually during the 2006–08 period, to $500 billion in 2009,[33][43] as well as to higher personal savings rates, which jumped from a historic low of 1% in early 2008, to nearly 5% in late 2009. The merchandise trade deficit rose to $670 billion in 2010; savings rates, however, remained at around 5%.”[44] (Wikipedia)

In the movie Ryan is more worried about his career ending. In fact, this may be his last trip his boss has sent Ryan with his co-worker so she can learn the ropes. He is focused on showing his company the human relevancy that is needed in the firing of employees, even though the computer and online service may be more cost effective. Ryan is trying to prove that a human presence is still needed to provide humanity to the situation and give empathic support to the employee. The computer cannot stop someone from leaving the room and behaving violently in the office. It cannot persuade someone from trying to commit suicide.

Ryan wants more than a one night stand with Alex in the movie. After a few brief interludes and some encouragement from his co-worker he decides invite Alex to the wedding. His world is dissolving right before his eyes Alex is the best thing that has happened for Ryan in a while. He misses her. He goes to her home only to find that she is the player. Alex is very happily married.             In the book Alex actually seems to be chasing Ryan. During their Vegas stay she insists that he remember her. “You honestly don’t remember me? Our session?  It wasn’t a seminar, you out placed me. I was waiting for you to confess.” (Krin p.257)Even after their wild time in Vegas Ryan still isn’t thinking about commitment.  Ryan is still in control, still does not need anyone fulltime. In the movie his world as he knows it is ended and he is afraid to go through the changes alone so he turns to Alex and a relationship. Ryan will have to face though changes alone.
